One thing that fascinates me is where topics come from that I write about. I guess all bloggers get to this stage sooner or later – I got to that stage later 🙂
But where do the topics come from?
I sometimes get an idea when I write a comment on another’s post. You and Michele Martin, and a few others magic up themes for topics for others. There are projects that we all take part in at work that stimulate ideas for our posts.
I’ve never had any problem dreaming up topics, but I fear that maybe some day I’ll run out of ideas. Others may have the same problem.
So what does one do when scrating around for a post topic? Regular posting seems to be a technique that some bloggers follow. And can a blogger get writer’s block when in a panic about writing a long-overdue-post?

And like a piece of art, people’s blogging can be a self portrait, a view of an inspiring landscape or occasionally something abstract or modernist. Really, Sue, you’re getting into the metaphors and analogies these days!

@Ashley Even I can’t believe that a simple question like do we call roads in Australia parkways or do you have parkways in your part of the World could lead to such a discussion. If you look here quickly you will see all the responses. The discussion lasted 6 hours and there was 41 tweets in reply to my questions.
Glad you are okay with the picture and I did worry you might be overwhelmed. But it was a great comment. Off course I probably should follow up with a post that discussed while you can put whatever you want onto it — it isn’t always appropriate. Perhaps this would be an opportunity for you to follow up with your own post and talk about what you is/isn’t appropriate to blog about because that is a very important topic and an aspect of blogging that is really important to understand. Or maybe you could write a short post asking readers to tell you what they think is/isn’t appropriate to blog about?
@Ken I saw Ashley comment and just went what a great saying about blogging. Hope you have dropped past Ashley blog because she is definitely coming up with some good ideas.
Blogging is funny — you definitely go through stages. When you have ideas but can’t be bothered blogging. Or would like to blog but can’t come up with ideas. Occasionally I have bloggers block and that is often when I force myself to blog because for me it is just something I need to overcome and once I do I’m fine again.
Mostly I get inspiration from the posts I read and the comments people write. You will often see on The Edublogger I will take the question someone has asked in a comment and turn it into a post.
Panic I supposes gets back to why you blog. I used to stress I try not to any more.

As you know language is where I truly struggle; handling metaphors and analogies is a constant battle that I wage. I know people who aren’t challenged in this way would find it hard to understand but interpreting and visualizing their meaning is hard for me.

I have a blog in name only. I don’t feel the need to think up ideas. I piggy-back, comment and reflect on the post or tweets of far more dedicated bloggerati and twitterati.
This is made easy with a simple google tool.
I sometimes feel a little lazy, but it is all I can manage and it seems a respectful way of acknowledging other people’s, creative and insightful ideas.
The posts or tweets I use as a springboard, mostly reflect my interests and beliefs. Not quite a “self-portrait” but nevertheless an indication of who I am.
As a teacher, I do aim to separate the personal from the professional as best as I can.

@Ashley Definitely okay. I think it is a really good conversation for the students to be involved in so that they can discuss these issues. You were the one that came up with the original saying so I think it is great that you have the post on your blog. Also this is a good way of the students seeing how blogging conversations flow from comments to several blogs.
@Gary Definitely social networking burnout is a big issue. There has been quite a few edubloggers writing on this topic. Are you finding in your area that the bloggers are also writing on it?
@Elaine The best aspect of all of this is it is about your own personal learning. So we all get to make our own decisions on what tools we use, who we connect with and the mechanisms we use for our learning. While at the moment I’m blogging many of the other things I used to do I don’t i.e. podcasting and my wiki site. There is only so much time in the day.

Blogging is a thought provoking activity for sure. I was conscious that many of my children were giving me cliched answers to the poverty issue in the blogging competition. I wanted them to go deeper, since we had already done a “walking in their shoes” assembly on poverty. I asked the question “which is greater poverty or wealth?” Fundamentally a philosophical question. I think you might be surprised by some of the responses I know I was! Especially since the average age of respondents was 8….

I regularly get bloggers block. My worst case was I suffered with it for a month. Was really hard. I think with me it is just I have to keep working through it. The other solution is to mix it up a bit with shorter and longer posts.
Try when you are a bit stuck do a really short simple post that you know will grab people’s attention. If you look at my blogs these are the posts that are often only a couple of paragraphs. I find readers the opportunity to share their thoughts. Short posts were you don’t offer any opinion but ask them theirs, on a topic you know will interest them, tends to work well. But they have to like the topic and question.
I find the title of the post the hardest part of the post. I will often write the post and choose the title at the last minute. With so many bloggers in the World you need to make every word count and be different from the majority. No problem re-comments — I really like comments.
@Marie and Nadine Easel was a bit of cheating. I grabbed and adapted an image using Photoshop so not something most would be able to do 😦

Thanks for the awesome advice. I can’t believe how well you set out your comment, how you write it and think it out.
I agree, every word counts when it comes to blogging, and we have to make sure what we write is top quality and interesting or else we shall get NO COMMENTS. 😦
It always get readers more enthused when you ask them to share opinions or ideas, even ask questions in a post for them to answer!
A month! Yikes. That is HEAPS. I suffer only for a few days.. once, I left a post for a whole 2 weeks and everyone thought I was on vacation!! 😆
The blog’s going good, I haven’t counted the votes yet, but soon will. Make sure to check soon, because the vote results will be up and running.
Titles for me come up in seconds. You see, when you have the “Writing Talent” titles become easy. I bet you now wish you were in my shoes, eh? I firstly choose my title, then work on with my writing. That would be the most difficult bit probably. But remember, when you don’t have a story to write about, you have NO title.
Sue Waters, have you tried the website Free Rice where you donate rice, every time you get a question right, to the poor and homeless in Africa?! Even a teeny bit would help heaps. If you haven’t seen it, let me know and I’ll give you the website so you can have a look and try to play. I know it sounds unusual for an adult to play a game, but it is to do with finding the meaning of words, they simply ask you what a certain word means and if you get the answer right, you donate 20 or so grains of rice to the poor. If you have seen it, how was it? How much rice did you raise? Was it difficult?

Yep it was considerable time. I keep blogging through it but it definitely was challenging — probably made harder by having two blogs.
Interesting how we approach writing posts in different sequences. Would love to know how others do it.
Heard lots about Free Rice but haven’t tried it.

I agree, writing comments is much simpler because you have what you want to say all written in your head. You have it planned after reading a comment or post! But as for writing a post, it takes much more time to consider every word which could affect your viewers in ways not imaginable.
Have 2 blogs would be REALLY difficult!

I think you should have a go at FreeRice because you can donate lots of rice to the poor! It would be a big help for them. Do you think you shall try it some day?

I understand that blogging is the new way of communicating, but I just cannot get into it. I would so much rather meet up with friends and talk about topics in person. I really do not understand facebook and myspace. Do people really need to know what I am doing on a daily/weekly basis? I have friends that update several times a day. Are they self-important or just bored? Maybe all of this will grow on me, but then again, maybe not.

@er1126 It does take time to understand the benefits of blogging. It took me over 12 months from being shown what is a blog to setting up my own blog and wanting to blog.
There is quite a bit of difference between Facebook, myspace and blogging. I’m not into Facebook either 🙂
